George Awdry was the uncle of Christopher Awdry, Hilary Fortnam and Veronica Chambers. He is also the brother-in-law to Margaret Awdry and the younger brother to Wilbert Awdry. He was born in 1916, two years after Carol Edward Vere Awdry was killed in action by German forces fighting both French and British armies at Aisne in France on the twenty-seventh of August 1914. Carol was the son of Wilbert Awdry and George wouldn't know about this from Wilbert. He was the man who wrote "The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways" with Wilbert. When Wilbert the Forest Engine came out in 1994, George died that year at the age of seventy-eight.
